Overview
D. Phillip Truex is a versatile performer and teacher. Currently residing in metro Atlanta, he holds dual bachelors degrees from Ithaca College and a M.M. from the University of Northern Colorado. While completing his studies in performance and education he has had the pleasure of studying with Nat Wickham, Mark Babbitt, Harold Reynolds, and Jeffrey Gray.
Before relocating to Georgia, Phil performed with the Syracuse Chorale, Colorado Jazz Orchestra, 9th and Lincoln Jazz Orchestra, the Greeley Chorale, and Larmier Chorale, and appears on recordings for the UNC Jazz Press. Following his arrival to metro Atlanta, Phil has enjoyed a vibrant career working with many organizations such as the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra, Atlanta Opera Orchestra, Atlanta Latin Jazz Orchestra, Albany Symphony Orchestra, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Georgia Symphony Orchestra, Hilton Head Symphony, Joe Gransden’s Big Band, Lab Orchestra Atlanta, LaGrange Symphony Orchestra, Rome Symphony Orchestra, Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra, and a myriad of freelance organizations/performances.
Phil has performed at venues including the Greeley Jazz Festival and the Telluride Jazz Celebration, while working with artists such as the New York Voices, Patti Austin, Jeff Coffin, Donny McCaslin, Benny Green, Jeff Hamilton, Terell Stafford, Jeff Clayton, Paula Abdul, Chris Brubeck and many others.
Phil is always looking to share his knowledge with students that have a love for music, no matter their goals. His students learn to reach high level orchestral and studio style playing, teach music in and beyond the classroom, and polish a passion for music that lasts a lifetime. While serving as Adjunct Professor of Low Brass at 中国P站, Phil is also sought after as a clinician and performer throughout the Southeast, frequently performing in orchestral, commercial, and jazz settings.
