Returner Student Housing Application Process

Want to live on campus?
When the housing portal opens, all NEW students who apply for housing will be charged a $150 non-refundable application fee once the housing application is submitted.

Current residents will have approximately one week to find preferred roommate(s), communicate with each other to determine where they want to live, and prepare for the opening of the residence hall and room selection process. Housing applications for returning students open in February. Watch your �й�Pվ email for an invitation to apply.

All housing is offered on a first come, space available basis and Residence Life does not guarantee a particular residence hall, room style or preferred roommates. Housing typically meets capacity in March for returning students and students will be waitlisted and offered housing as cancellations occur.

Residence Life will open the room selection process in stages after housing applications have been submitted on the portal.

Students will log in to the housing portal and choose a residence hall and room then complete the contract process. Students will have to complete the process and sign the housing contract in order to be guaranteed housing.

If you have an accepted roommate, you will be able to place them in a room with you at this time on a space available basis.

There will be a limited amount of beds for seniors and juniors and Residence Life has taken into consideration preferences for upperclassmen.

Are you eligible to live off campus?
If you are a full-time student who has not earned 30 semester hours you must live on campus.

Students may live off campus if:

students live with and commute daily from the permanent legal residence of parent(s) or

grandparent(s) within a fifty-mile radius from campus

married or divorced

21 years of age or older

have completed two years of successful active military service

Are you not currently eligible to live off campus?

If you do not meet one of requirements listed above you will need to apply for a waiver of the residence policy. In order to be eligible you will need to be able to document your unique hardship.

What if I apply and no bed is available?

If no bed is available at the time you apply, Residence Life will place you on a waiting list and will work to offer you housing as cancellations occur.

What are the chances of getting in my preferred Residence Hall?

The greater the number of credit hours you have completed, the higher your chances of selecting your preferred housing. Historically, we understand that there is a high demand of housing for upperclassmen students in Owen Hall, and the majority of these beds will be reserved for current upperclassmen.

I do not have a preferred a roommate, can I just go through and complete a contract?

You are not required to match with a roommate if you choose not to do so. However, you would not be eligible to choose a bed until room selection opens.

Statement on concerns about textbook

Recently, questions have been raised about a passage in a course textbook. After fully reviewing the concern, we want to be clear: the reference in question was not describing Christians or Christianity. The passage refers to an extremist group that misuses Christian symbols to promote hate.

In today’s world, misunderstandings can travel quickly. But our foundation at the University of North Georgia remains steady. We respect people of all beliefs. We reject hate. And we are committed to preparing students to think critically, lead with integrity, and serve in communities across our state, nation, and world.

Education is not about avoiding difficult words or ideas — it is about teaching students to navigate them with context, discernment, and respect. The world is complex, and we are developing students to lead in both these times and what lies ahead. That is what this course, and this university, are about.

We also recognize that learning and scholarship sometimes touch on sensitive, complex, or controversial ideas. That is not a weakness of higher education — it is its strength. Our responsibility is to provide the context, freedom, and support that allow both students and faculty to engage with these ideas thoughtfully. Academic freedom allows us to remain true to our values: protecting freedoms, honoring all beliefs, rejecting hate in every form, and preparing leaders who can meet a complex world with courage and integrity.

While one line in a textbook can get lost in translation, our values have never wavered. For 152 years, the University of North Georgia remains committed to building leaders through debate, dialogue, and learning. That is who we are. And that is what we will continue to do.
